Open Townhouse

West Village, NYC
with Ryall Porter Sheridan Architects

Conversion of an existing townhouse from a multi-family into single-family residence.  The main interior stair is considered a public ‘street’ where landings acting as public rooms, encouraging family interaction and spilling into each room.  Extensive reconfiguration of front and rear facades was supported by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission and developed a contemporary sensibility that would simultaneously satisfy the neighborhood’s historical sensitivity.  The rear facade is clad in bronze mesh to screen the windows from harsh south light. The composition of the acts a diagram of the spacial configuration of the entire house. Recipient of 2012 AIANY Interiors Merit Award (given annually by the New York Chapter of the American Institute for Architects ‘to honor the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to achieve design excellence’).
